The paper industry makes the products that America needs, while remaining sensitive to our shared environmental concerns. The industry is dedicated to producing its products in the most responsible manner possible by employing sustainable forestry practices, meeting and exceeding environmental protection requirements, and working to increase the amount of paper recovered for recycling.
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative¨? (SFI) program is showing the world a higher standard for implementing and promoting sustainable forestry practices. The SFI¨? program now encompasses over 130 million acres in the United States and Canada.
In addition to better management of our forests, our industry is a world leader in recycling. The U.S. paper industry recovers more material from the municipal waste stream than all other industries combined. Paper recycling has been a part of our industry for over 100 years, and recovered fiber now provides more than 36 percent of our domestic raw material supply. In 2005, 51.5 percent-51.3 million tons-of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling.
