You've bought the paper and the ink to do the job; now is the time to turn your attention to the finishing details...specifically, binding the printed materials. There are, of course, several methods of book bindery: perfect, plastic and wire comb, stapling, to name just a few. Each has its particular use; however, here we focus on stapling applications and options.
Probably the most common book bindery task for small printers and quick copy operators is booklet binding. From just a few dozen booklets to production runs of 10,000+ pieces, the task is the same: fold and bind 3 or 4 sheets, and up to 20 sheets of 20 lbs. bond, perhaps with a cover stock of 80 lbs. that may be coated.
Stapling just got easier with the DUAX® Desktop stapler. Staple 2 to 170 sheets with one stapler and one staple! Perfect for legal briefs and large documents. Patented technology automatically senses the depth of each paper stack and cuts the legs of the DUAX staple for an ultra-flat, clean staple. Cuttings fall into an easy-to-empty base compartment.

At the smallest end of the job scale you will be a school or small church group putting out a newsletter or event notice. A manual long-reach H-D bindery stapler such as the Salco HD-23L will do nicely. (See also HD-23, DS-12S book bindery staplers).
With the 10" reach of the tool, an 11"X17" paper can be stapled in the center, and then manually folded at the mid-point to make a booklet. Simple and effective for small volumes. Plus, the stapler has the capacity to staple up to 180 sheets of 20 lbs. bond making it also the tool of choice for commercial users needing to bind masses of print-outs or thick reports.
One needs only to select from 5 available different staple leg lengths to match the thickness of material to be bound. There is also an adjustable back-stop to reference the staple placement from the edge of the paper.

For small printers and copy shops that need greater output, the Salco R-106 Electronic flat and saddle stapler is ideal. It is standard by which all others are measured.(See also Salco R-105 electric stapler)
Capable of flat or saddle stapling operations, this electric booklet stapler has the ability to staple up to 50 sheets of 20 lb. bond. Three lengths of staples can be used, 6mm [1/4"], 8mm [5/16"] and 9mm [11/32"]. Moreover, the tool can be "ganged up" for simultaneous multiple stapling operations.
The individual staplers can be connected with fiber optic cables which turn them into unit operation, firing either by adjustable trips [for flat work] or a foot pedal [saddle stapling]. The perfect bindery solution for these higher volume operations is a good friction-feed folder and a Salco R-106 "Gangster" stapler package.
With such equipment the shop can produce high quality jobs numbering in the thousands of pieces with a modest capital outlay, and very economical production costs.

If extreme rugged durability and greater stapling capacity is required, the Salco Salut H-D saddle electric bindery stapler is the answer.
It can staple up to 3/4" of material, flat or saddle, using ultra high-carbon staples able to penetrate the densest of materials. It produces a flat "printer's" clinch by means of adjustable mechanical anvils, and can run fine or medium wire staple series with a simple change of drive blade and magazine face-plate.
While not an inexpensive tool, it is many hundreds of dollars less than a wire stitcher with comparable performance. Perhaps more importantly, it is easier to operate and maintain as the skills required to run it are modest.
